Beastie Boys’ MCA Announces Cancer; Shows Canceled, Album Delayed

Beastie Boys MCA Ad Rock Mike D

Fans from all over the world got some very sad news from the Beastie Boys‘ camp today. In a video posted to their YouTube channel (and embedded below), Adam “MCA” Yauch explained that his doctor found cancerous tumors in one of his salivary glands and a lymph node.

As a result, the Beastie Boys have decided to cancel all of their upcoming tour dates, including a headlining spot at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in August, while Yauch seeks treatment. Their upcoming Hot Sauce Committee, Pt 1 which was slated for a September 15th release, has also been delayed indefinitely.

This is such sad news…I’ve been a HUGE Beastie fan for more than 16 years and know just about every lyric to every song. My thoughts are with Adam and the whole Beastie Boys family…

A parotid/salivary gland tumor… that’s what you get when you use your cell phone too much…

Just a few days ago the following article appeared in an Israelian newspaper:
    http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1100570.html

“A recent study documents a sharp rise in the incidence of salivary gland cancer in Israel that researchers believe may be linked to the use of mobile phones.

The study was commissioned by the Israel Dental Association and directed by Avi Zini of the community dentistry department at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine.

Among salivary gland cancer cases, researchers found a worrying rise in the number of cases of malignant growth in parotid glands – the salivary gland located under the ear, near the location where cell phones are held during conversations.

From 1980-2002 the number of cases of parotid salivary cancer held steady at around 25 per year. The number of cases rose dramatically in the five years after to 70 cases per year.

Zini said, “the rise [in cancer cases] absolutely could indicate increased exposure to cellular telephones and damage caused by radiation.”
