Black Francis (Pixies) to Play Hotel Utah 8.7.09

Black Francis (Frank Black)

Another incident of an indie heavyweight playing in a very small Bay Area venue. This time around, it’s Frank Black, under the other pseudonym Black Francis, scheduled to play at the Hotel Utah Saloon on August 7th.

While Frank Black/Black Francis goes by many names (Frank Black & the Catholics, Black Francis, Grand Duchy, and his real name: Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV), he is best known for his time as frontman for the Pixies, the seminal indie rock band of the late 80s and early 90s.

While the Pixies were on hiatus from 1993 to 2004 (the band has played only intermittently since that initial reunion), Black Francis remained steadily active, releasing a rather large solo discography and touring the world several times over.

He was last seen in the Bay Area at the Uptown under his Grand Duchy moniker back in May, and now he’ll find himself on an even smaller stage at the Hotel Utah (500 4th St.) in San Francisco on Friday, August 7th. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., the show starts at 9:00 p.m., and $20/21+ age gets you through the saloon doors.

You can buy tickets here, and take note of the following (from the website): “Four ticket limit per person. Tickets are will-call only. They are NON-TRANSFERABLE. No hard tickets will be issued at any point. Purchaser must present ID at the door to claim tickets. NO EXCEPTIONS.” The Hotel Utah is quite small, and somewhat oddly shaped, so get there early if you want a good viewing spot.

And as it turns out, the Pixies will be at the Fox on 11/8 and 11/9. Very nice.
