Vague Panther Ambushes Ian MacKaye at Xmas Party

dcsnow

Call me a scrooge, but I generally consider Christmas parties to be an obligatory affair. Sure, it’s great to catch up with people you haven’t seen in a while, but I’m not that person who jumps with excitement when the group caroling begins. However, this year I have to give some major props to my friend Bill for throwing the best holiday party in recent memory. He not only managed to convince his wife that an ice luge was necessary, but he also confirmed that I have more dumb luck than anyone in the world.

Did I mention that one of Bill’s neighbors happens to be none other than Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi? I don’t think there’s a clearer definition of dumb luck. Especially since my overall knowledge of the hardcore scene of the late ’80s/early ’90s is seriously lacking (I was five). Frankly, I still can’t believe he even shook my hand.

Minty Fresh Beats Releases Jaydiohead

jaydiohead

Mashups as a whole annoy the hell out of me. But I’m somewhat impressed/intrigued by Minty Fresh Beats effort to combine Radiohead instrumentals with Jay-Z rhymes. For those Radiohead fans out there, don’t worry, it’s not just obvious samples - Minty Fresh gives some love to “Gagging Order,” a Kid A b-side.

Download the Jaydiohead project.

Commercial Madness: Lebron Throws Chalk to Cornershop in New Nike Ad

I would consider music direction for Nike’s TV ads to be one of my dream jobs. In fact, I’m not sure we’ve gone more than a month without posting something Nike related.

To continue the trend I give you Lebron throwing chalk to Cornershop’s “Candyman.” Siiiiiick.

2009 Upcoming Album Releases

As 2008 comes to a close, we at Stranger Dance are starting to look forward to what 2009 holds. A number of our favorite artists (Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, Wilco, etc.) have confirmed upcoming albums and even more are flirting with the idea.

A few things stuck out to us while compiling this this. First, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy promises his “biggest and most ambitious album” to date. The New Pornographers crew have obviously been busy with a new release scheduled for the group as well as members A.C. Newman and Neko Case (no word on an upcoming Destroyer album).

On the hip-hop front, Jay-Z is set to drop his third post-retirement album and we finally get to hear Detox and Relapse the long-awaited album from Dr. Dre and Eminem, respectively.

Below is a list of confirmed albums with release dates and MP3 samples where available (sorry Animal Collective fans, but…).

Panther Picks: Tunes of the Week

Due to some really, really dumb luck I had the fortune of running into Fugazi legend Ian MacKaye over the holidays. The brief meeting inspired me to check out some recent releases from Dischord Records, the D.C. label he started in 1980. And I’m glad I did because Faraquet’s anthology (1997–98) is just what I needed to take a trip down memory lane. I remember trying to play this on my guitar during ninth grade Jazz class…

Faraquet - “Sea Song”

Hot Chip has been up to some interesting things recently. Not only did they just release an EP featuring Robert Wyatt and Geese, but they also hooked up with Peter Gabriel to do a Vampire Weekend cover. Personally, “Made in the Dark” wins for me because it’s just such an elegant song with sneaky guitar swoons that get me every time. Add some Wyatt funktronic vocal stylings and you’ve got yourself a new makeout tune.

Hot Chip - “Made in the Dark” [f. Robert Wyatt]
Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel - “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” [Vampire Weekend Cover]

Am I the only one who thinks it’s funny for the frontman of a two-piece band to release a solo album? Ok, maybe I am. The Black Keys lead singer will be releasing Keep It Hid on February 10th, so consider yourself warned. You might get tired of listening to the Black Keys sound over and over, but this is truly Auerbach at his finest. Hopefully he keeps the distortion, wah-wahs and organs coming.

Dan Auerbach - “I Want Some More”

And the most random pick of the week goes to… Digable Planets. “Where I’m From” reminds me of a time when hip hop meant listening to smooth flow and even smoother jazz samples - god don’t you miss songs like this and Ahmad’s “Back in the Day?” You can guarantee this makes my New Years Eve party mix.

Commercial Madness: Adidas “Beggin’ ” for Frankie Valli Remix

I know you guys were worried when you saw that Uncle Corey did a Commercial Madness post last week, but don’t worry - I have no intention of giving up the spotlight. To prove it, I return with the new Adidas commercial featuring a Pilooski remix of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons‘ track “Beggin’.” Good stuff.

Panther Picks 14 - Radiohead at Outside Lands (Live Soundboard Recording)

[Editor's note: This post originally appeared on Aug. 25, 2008, as we were just getting Stranger Dance off the ground. Seeing as how posting over the holidays gets slow, but people's thirst for music doesn't, we've decided to re-post some of our favorite posts from the past year that folks may not have seen. Plus, a soundboard recording of the Outside Lands Radiohead show?! Fuck, yeah!]

For this week’s episode of Panther Picks I decided to post Radiohead’s performance at Outside Lands. Why? Because I’m obsessed and it was a life-changing event. Duh. Special thanks to KC who sent me this great bootleg recording that sounds like it was taken directly from the soundboard - in other words, it’s power-outage free. However, due to file sizes I did have to upload a few songs to BOX.NET Sendspace. Forgiveness please.

December Mixtape: Merry Christmas Baby

December Mixtape - Merry Christmas Baby

I have a love/hate relationship with Christmas music. I genuinely love it, but there are rules. First, I’m a big Grinch about playing Christmas music early. I’m stricter than most people on this issue, but can’t we all agree that Thanksgiving is the absolute earliest date to break out the sleigh bells?

There is also too much excellent Christmas music out there to accept listening to the same bad ’50s schmaltz every year. I understand that the holidays are all about tradition, but some traditions need to evolve.

With those sentiments (and a little Christmas cheer) I offer up the following mix, which will hopefully provide an improved soundtrack to your holiday season. It’s got songs spanning six decades and many genres, with songs you hear every year, and some others that don’t get enough love. Enjoy.

[Special thanks to Scooter for contributing songs from his extensive collection of Christmas tunes as well as his help with making this mix.]

I should start by saying that I was pretty excited for this show. I’ve been a pretty big fan of the Black Crowes for years, they put on an amazing show the last time I saw them (in 2005 at the 930 Club in Washington DC), and I’m a total sucker for Stones/Faces swagger and Southern-fried rock. Finally, I was excited to see the phenomenal Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi All Stars), who took over lead guitar duties last year. In fact, we were so excited about this show that we bought our tickets in June.

I feel a warning is in order before I get started: the following rant is probably going to make me sound even older and grumpier than I actually am. With that said, this was one of the more disappointing shows I’ve been to in years. Unfortunately, bad sound, weak song choices and awful fans made it impossible for my high expectations to be met.

Before getting too negative, I’ll start with the positives. The Black Crowes are a rock band in the truest sense; you can tell that they’re pros. Every part of the experience has clearly been thoughtfully considered — from the immaculate gear to the pre-show burnt-sage blessing to the prototypical backup singers. The band can also play — I was impressed with the tone and execution of every band member. They also clearly live to play music and each member (especially Chris Robinson) pours a lot into their show. Finally, Dickinson didn’t disappoint. He is one of the best living slide players in my opinion, and he shredded through every single break he took and served as a great foil to Rich Robinson, who has always been a much better rhythm guitarist than soloist. (As a side note, it was also cool to see über-hippie Wavy Gravy, watching the show from the balcony above.)

Panther Picks - Back in the Action

panther-000112

After a couple of tough weeks at work, some Thanksgiving turkey and other reasons to procrastinate, I’m finally back with some picks. Unfortunately, that means that some of the songs I’ve selected might be old news.

For example, last week Little Joy hit Slim’s and I would have loved to check it out - hopefully by posting “No One’s Better Sake” I can get someone to tell me how it was.

Does Bon Iver ever quit? Me thinks not. “Blood Bank” is the impressive title track off the upcoming four-song EP Blood Bank, which is available for pre-order now.

And speaking of bands that don’t quit, Deerhunter continues to slide its way up my list of favorite bands when they recently put out “side two” to the album Microcastle, called Weird Era Cont. I guess it’s kind of like the whole Kid A/Amnesiac thing, proving that too much of a good thing is never bad.

Finally, since we just came out with our Top 15 Albums of 2008, I thought I’d post a couple of bands that didn’t make the list but deserve some love. One of those is Grouper - in fact they/she didn’t even make my own top 15, but that’s probably just because it was sunny outside when I made my list. I’ve also read a lot about Amadou & Mariam but have listened to very little, which is most likely a terrible mistake on my part since much of what I have heard makes me want to dance.

MP3s:

Little Joy - “No One’s Better Sake”
Bon Iver - “Blood Bank”
Deerhunter - “Operation”
Grouper - “Heavy Water/I’d Rather be Sleeping”
Amadou & Mariam - “Sabali”
