Cousin Chris CD Release Party Thursday

Stranger Dance presents Cousin Chris

Just a reminder to everyone to head over to House of Shields (39 New Montgomery St.) Thursday from 6-10 p.m. (and hopefully later) for a CD release party for local artist Cousin Chris, who’s releasing his debut CD Moon Paper. There will be great food, great music, great people and, of course, beer.

If you’re a music fan, or merely an interested drinker, swing on by. Cousin Chris will have CDs for sale, we’ll have lovely Stranger Dance t-shirts for sale, and it should be a good time. You can even berate The Stranger for his unhealthy Tom Waits obsession … wait, that’s what I plan on doing. Sorry. Hope to see you there!

Also, take a look at our full fancy event poster.

Stranger Dance Presents: Cousin Chris CD Release Party

So, exciting times around these parts. Not only are 5 bajillion cool bands playing at Outside Lands a mere nine days from now, but we’re also breaking out of our little shell and throwing a party to celebrate the release of Cousin Chris‘ debut album Moon Paper. We’re inviting all our readers and fellow bloggers to join us next Thursday, Aug. 21 at House of Shields downtown (New Montgomery b/w Market and Mission) between 6PM and 10PM to celebrate the release of a great album and prime the pump for a great weekend ahead.

For those who don’t know, Chris Schreiber, aka, Cousin Chris, is a local boy who wrote, sang and played every instrument on Moon Paper. Rooted heavily in a blues (but not at all derivative), bathed in slide guitar and accented with his unique voice, Moon Paper carves out an original sound that, while minimalist, is still compelling and – most importantly – interesting. The album was recorded at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studios where bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Nada Surf and Mike Watt have all recorded. Cousin Chris sat down with me for a chat, which you’ll find – along with a sample of his music – after the jump.

And don’t forget to come out to House of Shields next Thursday and support a local musician (and bloggers!).

Political Rap – Welcome Back, My Friend

As the rhythm designed to bounce,
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind.
Now that you’ve realized the pride’s arrived,
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough

This was the mainstream rap of my youth. Sure, Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” never climbed as high on the charts as MC Hammer or Young MC, but most kids my age knew who Chuck D was and had a cursory understanding of what the band stood for.

Not so, for the last 10 or 15 years. It’s stupid to once again lament hip-hop’s slide toward materialismland … blah, blah, blah. Let’s instead look at a couple of really encouraging signs of rap’s return to political relevance – and I can’t imagine a better time.

Chris Jamison Releases Strangers and Lovers

In college “guys with guitars” are a dime a dozen. On my freshman hall there was something like twelve (myself included). And like all the cool dudes that play guitar, the first week of school was spent figuring out who was fit for jamming and who was a dud.

I’m not talking about skill necessarily, but taste. You know, what happens when you drop a Radiohead reference in conversation? Do they know that Jeff Buckley lick? Always making sure the coast is clear of sins like John Mayer or Dave Matthews (bands we all know how to play but feign disinterest in). Yes, college guitarists are way too cool for school – we judge each other’s personality based on what we play.

When I first met Chris Jamison six years ago he was the exception to the rule. He walked into my dorm room and asked if I wanted to jam over something he wrote. It was kind of like an ambush, but it was nice to meet someone who didn’t ask you if you knew “Sweet Home Alabama.” He was a person who had his own song to sing.

Brendan Canning’s “Something for All of Us” is More “Official” Now

Although Canning released the album digitally in response to a leak weeks ago, the physical thing is now “officially” in stores. I highly recommend picking it up, especially if you are a Broken Social Scene fan.

Read my review of Something for All of Us if you still aren’t sure.

Dilla. Ghost. Doom. - Sniper Elite, Murder Goons FINALLY Released

Stones Throw, you thought I forgot didn’t you? Late June my ass. Oh well. The tracks we have been waiting for are finally here:

In late 2005 Ghostface Killa and MF DOOM were both recording over tracks from J Dilla’s instrumental opus, Donuts, which saw release the following February. Some of these were released on Ghostface’s Fishscale in 2006, while others, including a Dilla-Doom project, were postponed indefinitely after J Dilla’s passing. Two of these tracks, “Sniper Elite” and “Murder Goons,” are presented here for the first time. The two are taken from two sequential songs off Donuts, meant to mix together. We are presenting the two songs unmixed, plus the two mixed together as a bonus track.

Since this is only a two-track release, I won’t leak it (at least for now). Support Stones Throw and and go buy Sniper Elite and Murder Goons on their official site. And no, I can’t account for the change of name of the track “Sniperlite” to “Sniper Elite.”

Coldplay Solidifies Guilty Pleasure Status on Daily Show

Coldplay

Coldplay’s whole Viva La Vida image is completely obnoxious. I mean those weird soldier boy outfits look like they are channeling a Spanish Jimi Hendrix. And what the fuck is up with Chris Martin’s guitar - did you finger paint that yourself or find it at a gypsy flea market? With the number one album in the WORLD right now, these guys are as commercial as you can get. Viva La Vida is as much of an “artistic” statement as it is a marketing campaign.

However, even I will admit that I was a fan back in the day. A part of me really wants them to get back to some good-for-what-it-is rock pop of A Rush of Blood to the Head. They haven’t completely done that with Viva La Vida, but dare I say that this performance shows a glimmer of hope? Sure, it starts out with really cheese lyrics accompanied by piano that makes you want to gag, but hey, what’s that at 1:52 minutes into the performance? Is that my foot tapping? Shit, it is.

Brendan Canning - Something for All of Us [Album Review]

Brendan Canning - Something for all of us

Originally, Brendan Canning was going to release Something for All of Us on July 22. However, the web had other ideas and Canning was forced to release his album early via the Arts and Crafts online store. He issued the following statement via his MySpace blog:

“It has come to my attention that an unmastered version of my album has been leaked through the internet. With the retail release being six weeks away, I’ve decided to correct the situation by releasing the album digitally myself, because I can. So this is for all you early birds who just couldn’t wait for July 22nd. But you know, it won’t be like going to your favourite record shop and getting a copy in your hot little hands, or sitting in your basement downloading it to your iTouch phone while playing Grand Theft Auto, it merely corrects the situation that is… a messed up version of my record floating around on the internet, and this is not how I wanted my record to drop. Believe me, this is not a minor situation. We’re talking recall here folks… With all of this in mind, please note: ‘Something for all of us…’ will be available at all fine retail and digital outlets in North America July 22nd with some additional artwork inside and slightly later for the rest of the world.”
