Panther Picks 14 - Radiohead at Outside Lands (Live Soundboard Recording)

[Editor's note: This post originally appeared on Aug. 25, 2008, as we were just getting Stranger Dance off the ground. Seeing as how posting over the holidays gets slow, but people's thirst for music doesn't, we've decided to re-post some of our favorite posts from the past year that folks may not have seen. Plus, a soundboard recording of the Outside Lands Radiohead show?! Fuck, yeah!]

For this week’s episode of Panther Picks I decided to post Radiohead’s performance at Outside Lands. Why? Because I’m obsessed and it was a life-changing event. Duh. Special thanks to KC who sent me this great bootleg recording that sounds like it was taken directly from the soundboard - in other words, it’s power-outage free. However, due to file sizes I did have to upload a few songs to BOX.NET Sendspace. Forgiveness please.

I should start by saying that I was pretty excited for this show. I’ve been a pretty big fan of the Black Crowes for years, they put on an amazing show the last time I saw them (in 2005 at the 930 Club in Washington DC), and I’m a total sucker for Stones/Faces swagger and Southern-fried rock. Finally, I was excited to see the phenomenal Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi All Stars), who took over lead guitar duties last year. In fact, we were so excited about this show that we bought our tickets in June.

I feel a warning is in order before I get started: the following rant is probably going to make me sound even older and grumpier than I actually am. With that said, this was one of the more disappointing shows I’ve been to in years. Unfortunately, bad sound, weak song choices and awful fans made it impossible for my high expectations to be met.

Before getting too negative, I’ll start with the positives. The Black Crowes are a rock band in the truest sense; you can tell that they’re pros. Every part of the experience has clearly been thoughtfully considered — from the immaculate gear to the pre-show burnt-sage blessing to the prototypical backup singers. The band can also play — I was impressed with the tone and execution of every band member. They also clearly live to play music and each member (especially Chris Robinson) pours a lot into their show. Finally, Dickinson didn’t disappoint. He is one of the best living slide players in my opinion, and he shredded through every single break he took and served as a great foil to Rich Robinson, who has always been a much better rhythm guitarist than soloist. (As a side note, it was also cool to see über-hippie Wavy Gravy, watching the show from the balcony above.)

Last Night: Vampire Weekend, Cold War Kids, Chairlift & More

Phew, that was a long show. I spent just over five hours at the Mezzanine last night, catching the Not So Silent Night pre-show party. The lineup was a little over the place, but the crowd was into all of the bands. All photos are courtesy of our illustrious staff photographer, Laura Ciekot, and are displayed in marquis order (i.e. reverse chronological). [Review and photos after jump.]

Everyone’s favorite preppy indie rockers put on a pretty impressive show. Vampire Weekend is easy to make fun of, but the fact is that their debut record is filled with good songs and they put on a great live show. A legion of young San Franciscans seemed to agree as evidenced by constant indie-bounce-dancing throughout their set.

Vetiver Sign to Sub Pop, Announce New LP & Tour, Release EP

Phew, things are busy for San Francisco’s own Vetiver right now. Andy Cabic and crew have signed with Sub Pop, through whom they are slated to release their fourth LP, Tight Knit, on February 17.

Vetiver started a supporting tour across the East and Midwest a few days ago, several dates of which will be opening for the Black Crowes.

In case you missed it, Vetiver also released More of the Past, a follow-up EP to the excellent and eclectic all-covers Things of the Past LP. The EP features “a couple of doozies” recorded for the Thing of the Past sessions which were left off the album.

Upcoming: Bay Area Legend Darondo at Slim’s 12/5

Unknown to all but serious R&B aficionados, William “Darondo” Pulliam is one of the most colorful and underrated musicians to come out of the Bay Area. A native of Berkeley, Darondo recorded three excellent singles and performed only four shows before calling it quits, creating a mystique which has lasted to this day.

He’s often described as a street-wise Al Green, which works for me, but he’s also got a healthy dose of Ron Isley mixed in. As great as his music was, Darondo’s mythology has grown because of his eccentric personality. After opening for James Brown, Darondo drove away from the show in his signature Rolls Royce and never performed again. After that, Darondo had stints as a pimp and host of multiple local public-access cable shows (such as Doze Comedy Videos, Darondo’s Penthouse After Dark and Tapper the Rabbit - clips available here) and then as a physical therapist (yes, seriously).

After decades out of the spotlight, Darondo has been getting love recently, showing up as the lead track on London DJ Gilles Peterson’s Digs America compilation and subsequently making the rounds on the blogosphere. The recent attention has led to a string of California shows, including one tomorrow (Friday) night at Slim’s.

On this 1973 single, Darando switches between a croak and whisper in a way that makes my head spin. Definitely worth a listen.

Ticket Giveaway: Anya Marina at Café Du Nord

Anya Marina

I was just introduced to Anya Marina recently, intrigued by the knowledge that Spoon frontman Britt Daniel produced her debut album (along with Brian Karscig of Louis XIV), Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II (due out Dec. 9).

The record evolved from a conversation with Britt:

“He was asking me about how I write and I told him I didn’t feel inspired to write much of anything. I had been listening to a lot of Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, and Public Enemy, and I was thinking about how their music has this rhythmic drive to it. I told Britt I felt frustrated that I couldn’t write that way.

A week later, a CD of beat loops that Daniel had created arrived in Marina’s mail. “Those loops ended up giving birth to ‘Move You,’ ‘Two Left Feet,’ ‘Cut It Out,’ ‘All The Same To Me,’ and ‘High on the Ceiling,’ ” she says. “It really changed the way I wrote.”

Marina plays at Café Du Nord (with Elisa Toffoli) next Thursday (Nov. 20) and we have tickets to give away to you and a friend. To win, simply send an email (at Stranger@strangerdance.com) explaining why you’re a worthy recipient. The winner will be picked on Tuesday.

Loquat Album Release Party at BotH

Loquat

I’m a little bored with the electro-pop indie scene. Sampled midi-drums? Arpeggiated synth-strings? No, thank you. Still, there are always exceptions, and bands like The Sea and Cake, Cut Copy and San Francisco’s own, Loquat, make great records regardless of their “indie-electronica” classification.

Ticket Giveaway: Black Keys & Dr. Dog at The Fillmore

The Black Keys Dr Dog Fillmore

We have two pairs of tickets to give away for the San Francisco stop of the Converse Century Concert Series featuring The Black Keys and Dr. Dog at the Fillmore on October 30 (this Thursday).

To sweeten the deal, the good folks at Converse also threw in bracelets for a pre-show meet and greet with the bands. Not bad, huh?

The concert is the last in the Converse Century Concert Series, which is “designed to bring intimate gigs to fans at a reduced price.” If you were able to get tickets before they sold out, they were only $10, which you can’t beat with a stick. The series also included shows in Philadelphia featuring Sonic Youth and The Hold Steady; Chicago featuring N.E.R.D. and Bad Brains; and San Diego featuring Social Distortion and the Reverend Horton Heat. Each of those show sound pretty interesting, but I think they saved the best lineup for the San Francisco installment.

To win, simply send an email to stranger@strangerdance.com with your name and a favorite Black Keys or Dr Dog lyric. We’ll pick winners on Wednesday morning and contact them via email. Good luck.

[Editor's note: The contest is now closed. Thanks to all that entered, and congratulations to Katie and Dan. Enjoy the show!]

Dr. Dog - “The Beach” [Live]
