Commercial Madness: Lebron Throws Chalk to Cornershop in New Nike Ad

I would consider music direction for Nike’s TV ads to be one of my dream jobs. In fact, I’m not sure we’ve gone more than a month without posting something Nike related.

To continue the trend I give you Lebron throwing chalk to Cornershop’s “Candyman.” Siiiiiick.

Commercial Madness: Adidas “Beggin’ ” for Frankie Valli Remix

I know you guys were worried when you saw that Uncle Corey did a Commercial Madness post last week, but don’t worry - I have no intention of giving up the spotlight. To prove it, I return with the new Adidas commercial featuring a Pilooski remix of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons‘ track “Beggin’.” Good stuff.

‘Flight of the Conchords’ New Season Premiers Online

This is so cool. HBO threw fans of “Flight of the Conchords” — which may be the best series on TV now that “The Wire” bit the dust — a major bone today, debuting the season two premier online, on both its site and Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s FunnyorDie.com. Awesome display of Web savvy by HBO, and also a huge coup for FunnyorDie. Check out New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-parody duo in action.

Commercial Madness: Pavement and Hyundai Capital

This made the rounds throughout the music press last week: A South Korean commercial for Hyundai Capital (a financial offshoot of Hyundai Automotive Group) using Pavement’s “Stereo,” the lead-off track to 1997’s Brighten the Corners. And you thought Hyundai just made crappy cars, huh?

Anyway, the commercial splices together opening bits to “Stereo” with cars, houses and a motorcycle floating around people’s heads, and a bunch of Korean writing. The fact that Pavement sold their music for a commercial is more interesting than the spot itself. A sellout by an indie-rock institution? Nah, but certainly notable.

Thanks to Vague Panther for letting me invade his territory.

Video: Lykke Li & Bon Iver “Dance Dance Dance” in L.A Park

Two Stranger Dance favorites, Lykke Li and Bon Iver, teamed up to perform an acoustic version of Li’s breakthrough single “Dance, Dance, Dance” in an LA park.

The video is candid, cute and surprisingly close to the original considering the setting and instrumentation (voice, guitar, accordion/squeezebox, sleigh bells, toy trumpet/kazoo, chain, and guitar-case-turned-drum).

Killing Time with KEXP’s Live Music Vault

If you have a few hours to kill and a hankering for good live music, I’d highly recommend heading over to KEXP’s Web site and checking out its live music archive. The Seattle-based independent radio station has been a Web pioneer since the early days of the Internet and does simply fantastic work, both in its radio broadcast and Web content.

One of the hidden nuggets is the “Live Video of the Week” on KEXP’s blog, showcasing live performances from the station’s Seattle or New York studios. It’s really great stuff from a huge variety of bands, including Fujiya & Miyagi, Mates of State, Okkervil River, Nada Surf and tons more. One that caught my attention was a band from New Zealand called Bang Bang Eche!

Bang Bang Eche! – “Four to the Floor”

Dig a bit deeper into the KEXP archives, and there’s a virtual cornucopia of live podcasts and performances from the “Live at CMJ” series (including a stellar 2007 performance by Band of Horses) and the station’s live performance archives. It’s easy to get lost for a while.

R.I.P. Folk Legend Odetta, 1930-2008

Folk legend and “voice of the civil rights movement” Odetta died yesterday of heart disease. She was 77 years old.

Odetta came to prominence in the 1950s, and was a major influence on future superstars like Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez and Janis Joplin.

Odetta’s influence on Dylan was such that he credited her as his inspiration to ditch rock in favor of folk music (before going back to rock, of course):

“The first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta. I heard a record of hers in a record store, back when you could listen to records right there in the store. Right then and there, I went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar, a flat-top Gibson. … [It was] just something vital and personal. I learned all the songs on that record.”

Fleet Foxes: New Video ‘From the Basement’

We’re pretty gaga about Fleet Foxes around here. We also tend to love just about everything that comes out of the From the Basement series. You can imagine how our hearts were aflutter when we heard that the Foxes brought their baroque folk goodness to the high-def environs of the FtB studio.

Amazingly, the video actually lives up to our high expectations well. As Scooter put it, their performance of “Blue Ridge Mountains” is “flawless”. Enjoy:

New Black Cab Session: Lambchop Covers Dylan

The always excellent Black Cab Sessions released a new sessions featuring SD-favorites Kurt Wagner (of Lambchop). This outing finds Wagner covering Dylan’s “You’re a Big Girl Now.”

Lambchop - “You’re a Big Girl Now” [Bob Dylan Cover]

Now that we’ve whet your appetite, here are a few more Lambchop gems as well as an alternate version from Dylan’s “New York sessions” for Blood on the Tracks.

Commercial Madness: Dentyne and Coconut Records

Dentyne’s new commercial called “Make Face Time” isn’t much to write home about except for the fact that it features a little Coconut Records ditty called “Summer Day.” For those of us who aren’t rabid “Rushmore” fans, Coconut Records is the name of actor Jason Schwartzman’s solo project. “Summer Day” is from CR’s 2007 debut, Nighttiming. (O-R They?)
