Commercial Madness: Cat Power, Cover Fiend – Lincoln Makes Space Oddity

It’s no secret that Cat Power loves a good cover and loves using them in commercials. The people at Lincoln recently featured her version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” for the new MKS commercial. If someone would be so kind as to share this with our readers, please email me. I can’t find it anywhere.

[UPDATE: We wrote an open letter to Matador records requesting they free Cat Power's "Space Oddity"! Show your support by commenting.]

[UPDATE: We received a (very prompt) response from Matador Records.]

As far as I know, it’s a 30 second clip commissioned by Lincoln. Maybe if enough people want it they’ll release a full version.

In the past, Lincoln has been good about releasing good music from their ads. What’s up with withholding Cat Power’s version of “Space Oddity”?

  24. # 24 seister3@verizon.net | November 30th, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Great song I sure hope the release the full version of this teriffic song. Much better than the David Bowie version.

  25. # 25 Rock Action | December 6th, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Better than Bowie’s version?? What’s WRONG with you people??? It’s a good cover song ( I wouldn’t be on this site if I didn’t think so) but she wouldn’t have this marvelous song to cover if it wasn’t for the original! What did she do differently to warrant the song being better? From what I hear the arrangements are similar to the original and only her vocals carry the weight of the difference. Let’s all give credit to where credit is due..and not dethrone the value of David Bowie’s musical input to the world. Know your rock and roll roots, people!

  26. # 26 Claire Scott | December 20th, 2008 at 2:46 PM

I WANT the Cat Powers version of Bowie song Space Oddity. The original Bowie version is fantastic, but Cat Power’s short version on the commercial is equally fantastic. I WANT A COPY OF THE FULL VERSION. Please Cat Power, release a full version SOON.

    Claire from Miami.

But anyway, maybe we could start an online demand for it, maybe we should spam cat power’s website/myspace, begging for a full version…what do ya think?

  33. # 33 VaguePanther | January 14th, 2009 at 7:06 PM

If Cat Power isn’t going to give us the full song – maybe someone else should… Bowie’s song was great for the 60s, it is 40 years later now: TIME FOR A REMAKE! Christina Aguilera, are you thinking what I’m thinking?
