Free “Space Oddity”: Matador Standoff, Day 2

Cat Power black

Alas, I have some bad news my friends. We received a very prompt response from Matador Records and despite my idle threats (who wouldn’t be scared of a blogger?) it appears that Cat Power only recorded a fragment of the song and what you hear on the commercial is all you get.

Matador’s Response:

Hi Vague Panther,

We’re more than used to blog posts lamenting our poor judgment – we welcome them!

Chan Marshall recorded only the fragment of “Space Oddity” that you hear in the commercial. There is no full-length version. She has no plans to record a full-length version at this time, and those decisions are up to the artist, not us.

Best wishes,
Matador

Crap on a stick. One can only hope that somewhere out there Cat Power is reading this post and a single tear is cascading down her cheek. We love you Cat Power – how about another covers album with “Space Oddity” on it? Better yet, how about a Stranger Dance exclusive release? Just have your people get in touch with my people.

Special thanks to Matador Records for being able to take a joke – Stranger Dance applauds you for being one of the only labels out there WITH good judgment (and a damn good roster).

Check out their latest releases here. (Update: Also check out their fall sampler. Great stuff.)

Ask them when the hell they’re going to push the “Brighten the Corners” reissue out the damn door! … And if I can get an advance copy.

I just heard this cover for the first time and tried to look for the full version of the song. Thanks a lot for this information.

  5. # 5 Space Oddity not a whole song? | May 15th, 2009 at 7:48 AM

Wow, while I can’t stand that it wasn’t a whole song, thanks Stranger Dance for getting the lowdown. I have been checking every week to see if it would pop up on itunes or Cat Power’s website. No matter what I discovered a great new artist. But since it is up to her to record it maybe we should ask her to do it. (Sad puppy dog eyes)

Sorry to burst your bubble folks, but the song is actually a cover of “MAJOR TOM (Coming Home)” by PETER SCHILLING. It’s kind of a follow up to Bowies songs.

    I LOVE the cover though.

Please do us a favor and redo your research regarding your post #6.

If however you being confused with:

Lincoln MKZ: Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Shiny Toy Guns,

    and not the original

Lincoln MKS: “Space Oddity” cover by Cat Power commercial then your forgiven.

The Shiny Toy Guns cover was good to though IMO, I too would love to see a full version Cat Power cover of Space Oddity. Thanx for the research Matador.
