J. Tillman: Vacilando Territory Blues, ‘Firstborn’ Video

J. Tillman - Vacilando Territory Blues

In case you haven’t heard the gorgeously tortured songs of J. Tillman before, the phrase “better late than never” comes to mind. Somewhere between Nick Drake, Iron & Wine, Ryan Adams and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy in sound, Tillman has quietly released six beautiful records, including his most recent, Vacilando Territory Blues (released January 20).

Tillman got his first exposure when like-minded musician Damien Jurado tapped him to play in his touring band and open for him. Know better known for his side-project, the hugely popular Fleet Foxes, Tillman’s solo records are well worth listening to on their own merit.

PitchforkTV recently premiered the video for “Firstborn,” an achingly beautiful song featuring fellow Fleet Foxes Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo. Directed by Matt Blodgett and Matt Mastrorocco, the video matches the song’s austere beauty. Pitchfork’s description summed it up neatly: “A bunch of Fleet Foxes appear on the stark song. A bunch of birds appear in the stark video.”

Still one of the best solo acts out there (even with help from FF), Tillman always provides quality songs with maximum “hush”.

Video is a bit too sparse…but, I guess that is the name of the game. The song however is absolutely magnificent!
