January Mixtape: Best of the Bay Area [Part 1 of 2]

San Francisco MUNI N Judah

We decided to change things up for this month’s mix. Instead of working around a theme (Christmas, Harmony, etc.), we’re highlighting some of the best artists from San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

After pouring through our local music collection, we came up with so much good music that we quickly realized that it’d be impossible to whittle the list down to a single mix, so we’re making this a two-parter. This month’s installment will feature some of the more toe-tap-worthy with next month’s dedicated to songs with less than 80 BPM and/or folkier choices (and no, we don’t think of folk as a four-letter word).

We tried to stick to current acts and bands that still identify with the Bay Area — artists that might be sitting next to you on the MUNI any given day. Green Day, Journey and the Counting Crows might have been “local bands” back in the day, but none of them are playing Slim’s or the Rickshaw Stop anytime soon.

Some of these bands have gotten more press (The Dodos, Geographer, Deerhoof) than others, but we promise there’s not a weak one in the bunch.

I’m really into LoveLikeFire so I’m glad you’ve mentioned them :) I was trying to find bands similar to them and I came across this new band also from Liverpool called Sound of Guns, don’t know if you’ve heard of them. I’d really recommend them. Here is their official site-
