Locals Only: 2009 Rock Make Street Festival (Bay Area Event Highlight)

2009 Rock Make Street Festival

[Locals Only is a regular feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.]

The 2009 Rock Make Street Festival takes DIY to a new level, bringing music and art away from the exclusionary and back to the grassroots. Presented  by the Bay Bridged, Tartufi, Whizbang Fabrics, and Noise Pop, the festival will take place on Sunday, August 23rd from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Treat Street between 17th and 18th – featuring 2 stages, 15 bands, and 70 different vendors. More details, full schedule and MP3s after the jump.

A week from this Sunday, August 23rd, the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival will take over Golden Gate Park. It will be enormously fun; it will also be huge, and much more than a casual afternoon in the park, so to speak. In a way, the Rock Make Street Festival will be the humble preempt to the Bay Area major festival, providing a smaller, community-like setting of local music and art.

While Bay Area bands play two outdoor stages (including three kids’ bands kicking off the day – The Psychotherapists, Secret Cat, and the She’s), a variety of local vendors will be displaying and selling their visual art, crafts, and fashion pieces to the public. The full list of 2009 vendors can be found here.

This collective effort will provide an accessible tribute to the music and art of our backyards, free of charge and (quite literally) located down the street. Additionally, an official festival pre-party will take place on Saturday, August 22nd (details below).
