Locals Only: New MP3 Round-Up
[Locals Only is a weekly feature where the Stranger Dance staff focus on the best and brightest of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. Feel free to hit us up with any information on local bands, musicians, shows, and other music-related events and projects.]
What’s a Tuesday without some new music? Here’s a sampling of new stuff from the Bay, featuring My First Earthquake (pictured), the Skygreen Leopards, Kid Mud, Grand Lake, Battlehooch and Love is Chemicals.
All acts listed are Bay Area-based unless noted otherwise.
- My First Earthquake will, appropriately enough, shake and shatter any Blondie-lovin’ sensibilities that you may have locked away with your memories of CBGB’s circa 1975. “Cool in the Cool Way” is the first single from the band’s full-length debut, Downstairs, which comes out on June 20th – and it is unequivocally infectious and absolutely fabulous. The album, produced by Mercury Rev’s Anthony Molina, is currently streaming on My First Earthquake’s website, and will be celebrated live as follows:
- June 20th: My First Earthquake Downstairs record release, with Blue Rabbit and B and not B, at Cafe du Nord. 9:30 p.m., $10, 21+
- The Skygreen Leopards will be Jagjaguwar-tastic on July 21st with Gorgeous Johnny, the band’s new album. “Dixie Cups in the Dead Grass” has begun circulation on the webs, and it’s full of folksy goodness. Live shows:
- June 27th: the Skygreen Leopards, with White Hinterland (Portland) and Prince Rama of Ayodhya (Boston), at the Hemlock. 9:30 p.m., $8, 21+
- July 11th: the Skygreen Leopards Gorgeous Johnny record release, with Pumice (New Zealand) and Ingotrot, at Amnesia. 9:00 p.m., $8, 21+
- Kid Mud is set to release his first full-length on June 16th on New and Used Records: Now They Shut Us Down follows the previous N&UR releases of Birds Will Move In and Reworkings and Remixes EPs. “Federated” provides a taste of more warm electro-indie from the one-man prolific band, with new fuzzy shades and ethereal layers. Live and alive:
- June 17th: Kid Mud, with Gosta Berling and Skeletal System, at El Rio. 8:00 p.m., $5, 21+
- Grand Lake are bringing back the audio cassette. Put that in your 8-track and smoke it. “Sanddusky Sunset” comes out as a cassette single on June 23rd, complete with digital download (B-side: “Why Do You Lie to Me”), on 500 Records (also home to the Nevermint EP). The band will also be selling the cassettes at the following show, for the eager beavers and general enthusiasts:
- June 11th: Grand Lake, with Beatbeat Whisper and the Heated, at El Rio, presented by the Deli SF. 9:00 p.m., $5, 21+
- Battlehooch’s efforts to storm the Bay Area scene (via street performances and self-screened, monikered headbands) now come to form in Piecechow, the band’s debut full-length out on June 16th. Battlehooch recorded and produced the album in their own home, and brought forth some awesomely schizo prog-rock. Help celebrate Piecechow in person:
- June 24th: Battlehooch Piecechow record release, with Tempo no Tempo and Deastro (Detroit), at Bottom of the Hill. 9:00 p.m., $10, 18+
- Love is Chemicals will provide another tasty homage to the 90’s Pavement-types with Song of the Summer Youth Brigade, their second full-length album (out on July 21st on Three Ring Records). Anthemic and driving, “Over Land, Over Sea” provides a solid example of what’s to come. Time for live:
- June 21st: Love is Chemicals, with Minmae (Portland) and Jubala (Los Angeles), at Bottom of the Hill. 9:00 p.m., $8, 21+
