Monsters of Folk – Love it or Hate it?

Monsters of Folk

The first MP3 from Monsters of Folk has hit the blogosphere – “Say Please.” This band practically defines the term “supergroup,” as a band comprised of Bright Eyes‘ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer-songwriter M. Ward is quite impressive, given their already-established individual reputations. The band’s debut self-titled album comes out on September 22nd.

Is the name ridiculous, or brilliant? Is the song underwhelming, or magnificent? Let us know what you think. Personally, I think more facial hair needs to be involved. Oh, and I like the song.

This is the Internet; everyone and anyone has an opinion. What’s yours?

Fall tour dates (including a Bay Area show on October 17th) and album tracklist after the jump.

    Traveling Wilburys 2.0

Just stop letting Oberst sing and I’m cool with it.

Yeah, Oberst’s voice always rubs me the wrong way, but everything else in this particular song seems to even it out.

Oh gawd, Jay’s hit the nail on the head here! I got about three stanzas in and had to hit the kill switch. Not even facial hair could save this, sorry :(

Monsters of FOLK – not indie. The bands name comes across as false advertising. The track is alright, and they do have talent. I might be more inclined for a duet with Jim James and M. Ward instead…. but maybe the full album will save it…

Stansmith, I’m hoping that the name is at least pseudo-irony, even if they are the closest most hipsters would ever get to folk.

Also with you on the James/Ward part – that’s an album I’d be excited about. Either way, I’m definitely at least curious to hear the whole album.

[...] asked you the other day whether Monsters of Folk were your cup of tea, and the reviews have mostly been positive. Now you’ll get to see them up close and in person [...]

@Anna I’m down with “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)” on myspace. But yeah, I don’t think we’ll ever be safe from the big O.
