Jim James Hospitalized After Concert Fall

Jim James MMJ

Jim James (My Morning Jacket frontman) fell during a show last night (October 7) in Iowa City, injuring himself badly enough to require hospitilization. As a result, James’ was forced him to cancel his appearance at an Obama benefit in Chicago tonight.

According to local newspaper The Gazette:

“James slipped and fell about 30 minutes into the band’s set at the Recreation Building and was taken to a hospital. The remainder of the show was canceled…

“James apparently hit his head in the fall, which happened in the dark between songs. The extent of his injuries were not known.”

Pitchfork reported that James “fell off the front of the stage and onto a row of bass cabinets following the conclusion of “Off the Record.” ”

The rest of the band left the stage as James fell, with drummer Patrick Hallahan returning minutes later to inform the crowd of the accident. Hallahan and the rest of the band (sans James) returning minutes later to announce that the show was cancelled.

“‘Jim was really hurt. He’s heading to the hospital,’ Hallahan said. ‘We’re really sorry, this has never happened before.’”

Hallahan’s apology can be (partially) heard here:

When I saw him play in September, he was wearing a cape. Guess you’re just never safe, even when you take precautions.

    Hope he feels better.

However, this fall might make his falsetto even better a la Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas. . . Her vocal range was improved by three notes after she was hit on the head by some copper tubing.

Is that bit about Mama Cass true, or another urban legend (a la the infamous ham sandwich incident). Never heard that. Pretty crazy if it’s true.
