Phoenix Covers Bob Dylan

During a special acoustic set for German magazine, Musikexpress, Phoenix played a version of Bob Dylan’s “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.” Dylan’s 11-minute original was condensed down to under 5:00, but all-in-all it’s a decent listen.
That being said, I await your “this is a travesty” in the comments section below.

Covers Project: Bon Iver Breaks Our Hearts

It’s a very special Bon Iver week here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Justin Vernon and crew played the legendary Fillmore this past Tuesday, September 22nd (where he announced the band’s upcoming hiatus, apparently), and tonight, September 24th, they’ll be taking the stage at the newly-renovated Fox Theater.
In celebration of such beautiful music here [...]

Covers project: Marissa Nadler’s Folk Renditions

Credit is due to Wears the Trousers for this little collection of covers from the bewitching Marissa Nadler. The folk songstress casts shades of neo-folk on both the classic and contemporary, bringing her ethereal grace and quavering vocals to songs originally performed by Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, John Lennon, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, etc. Helping her [...]

Covers Project: “A Change is Gonna Come”

Today’s cover project choice is more “ripped from the headlines” than normal. In recognition of today’s historic inauguration, we’re profiling Sam Cooke’s classic “A Change is Gonna Come.”
A civil rights anthem for decades, the song took on new importance recently when it became the de facto theme for Obama’s election. Everyone and their brother chose [...]

Top 15 Albums of 2008

It’s that time of year again — the turkey leftovers are long gone and we’re hearing Christmas music in every store in town, so it must be time for best-albums-of-year lists.
After screaming matches, insults and a fist fight or two, the dust has settled and the Stranger Dance staff stands before you united with our [...]

New Rolling Stone List: 100 Greatest Singers of All Time

The most recent issue of Rolling Stone Magazine lists the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in an effort to get all of us blogging our raves and rants. Mission accomplished.
I actually have to give the Rolling Stone crew some props for this list because I personally think it’s a harder one then “100 Greatest [...]

R.I.P. Folk Legend Odetta, 1930-2008

Folk legend and “voice of the civil rights movement” Odetta died yesterday of heart disease. She was 77 years old.
Odetta came to prominence in the 1950s, and was a major influence on future superstars like Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez and Janis Joplin.
Odetta’s influence on Dylan was such that he credited her as his [...]

New Black Cab Session: Lambchop Covers Dylan

The always excellent Black Cab Sessions released a new sessions featuring SD-favorites Kurt Wagner (of Lambchop). This outing finds Wagner covering Dylan’s “You’re a Big Girl Now.”
Lambchop – “You’re a Big Girl Now” [Bob Dylan Cover]

Now that we’ve whet your appetite, here are a few more Lambchop gems as well as an alternate version from [...]

Cover Project: “Mama, You Been on My Mind”

Bob Dylan covers are nothing new, but when you’ve got a gorgeous and underrated original, and covers by The Beatles (well, John Lennon), Johnny Cash and Jeff Buckley, you’ve got something extraordinary.
“Mama” was originally recorded during the Bringing It All Back Home sessions in 1965, but wasn’t officially released until 1991 with the release of [...]

Election Day Is Finally Here! [Best Political Songs]

A few of us here at Stranger Dance fled the DC area to get away from politics, but even we’ve gotten caught up this election season. Having said that, I’ll be happy when it’s all over and we can start moving forward.
However, if you just can’t get enough of this battle, you can even check [...]
