The Stranger Dance

Killing Time with KEXP’s Live Music Vault

If you have a few hours to kill and a hankering for good live music, I’d highly recommend heading over to KEXP’s Web site and checking out its live music archive. The Seattle-based independent radio station has been a Web pioneer since the early days of the Internet and does simply fantastic work, both in its radio broadcast and Web content.

One of the hidden nuggets is the “Live Video of the Week” on KEXP’s blog, showcasing live performances from the station’s Seattle or New York studios. It’s really great stuff from a huge variety of bands, including Fujiya & Miyagi, Mates of State, Okkervil River, Nada Surf and tons more. One that caught my attention was a band from New Zealand called Bang Bang Eche!

Bang Bang Eche! – “Four to the Floor”

Dig a bit deeper into the KEXP archives, and there’s a virtual cornucopia of live podcasts and performances from the “Live at CMJ” series (including a stellar 2007 performance by Band of Horses) and the station’s live performance archives. It’s easy to get lost for a while.

Treasure Island Festival 2008 – VP Sells Out…

Treasure Island Festival

Last year’s Treasure Island Music Festival was somewhere between meh and ehh. While the lineup was decent (Built to Spill, Spoon, Modest Mouse, etc.) something wasn’t clicking for me. Was it the bus ride? The windy nights? No. It was something else. Something much more offensive than the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah live set (love the album, but the live experience was seriously lacking).

It was those damn smug jerks in the VIP area.

You and your private bar, ATM machine and port-a-potties. Who do you think you are dancing with your own troupe of costumed monsters? Black leather couches? Martinis?

No, you’d never catch me sitting in the VIP section. I’m a man of the people, one who knows the importance of standing shoulder to shoulder with other rabid fans as you piss your pants because you don’t want to give up your spot. I would never, never, ever…

Ok, fine. I admit it. This year Stranger Dance scored VIP tickets and I was there. Don’t hate – I’m weak and fragile. I wear earplugs. Mass gatherings of people frighten me. Can you forgive me? I mean come on people – massage tables! Chicken tenders! Free USB keychains! Et tu Brute? I mean it can only make my review that much better. God, what have I done!?

Treasure Island Festival Preview

Treasure Island Festival

We’re having a very pirate-themed week here with a Lambchop-endorsed National Talk Like a Pirate Day yesterday and the Treasure Island Festival today and tomorrow.

Here’s a preview of some of the festival’s talent, including a lot of great Bay Area bands.

Saturday:

Justice - “Planisphère (Part 2)”
CSS - “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above”
TV on the Radio - “Dirtywhirl”
Goldfrapp - “Hairy Trees”
Hot Chip - “Boy from School”
Aesop Rock - “Daylight”

Sunday:

The Raconteurs - “Level”
Dr. Dog - “The Old Days”
Vampire Weekend - “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”
The Dodos - Fools
Fleet Foxes - “English House”
Okkervil River - “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe”
Tokyo Police Club - “Tesselate”
Port O’Brien - “Five and Dime”
John Vanderslice - “Trance Manual”
Or, the Whale - “Isn’t She Awful”

Panther Picks (Episode 13) - Lucky 13

I have a good feeling about these picks despite their unlucky number. Who would have thought that Peter, Bjorn and John’s new LP Seaside Rock would be an instrumental? Not I. But then again they’re from Sweden, so I guess that makes it ok.

I was also inspired by today’s David Byrne & Brian Eno release to post “Glass, Concrete and Stone,” the highlight of the In Good Company soundtrack that makes me shutter with fear of corporate America. And yes, I finally gave into all the Okkervil River hype - although I’m not completely sold on the whole album, “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe” isn’t all bad. Check it out and judge for yourself.

MP3s:

Peter, Bjorn and John - “Inland Empire”
Bark Hide and Horn - “Treasure of the Everglades”
David Byrne - “Glass, Concrete and Stone”
TV on the Radio - “Let the Devil In”
Yo La Tengo - “Black Flowers”
Okkervil River - “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe”

Justice & Raconteurs to Headline 2008 Treasure Island

Treasure Island Festival

Another Planet Entertainment just announced the lineup for the 2nd annual Treasure Island Music Festival. Headlining this year’s event will be Justice and the Raconteurs, with other big names such as Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend, Stranger-Dance-favorites TV on the Radio, and a host of smaller bands rounding out the two-day festival.

A.P.E. was smart to include some solid local acts to this year’s event, inviting the Dodos, Mike Relm and Bay Area mainstay John Vanderslice to perform.

A limited number of early-bird two-day tickets will be available for $99 through a pre-sale on May 29. Regular single-day ($65) and two-day tickets ($115) go on sale May 30. VIP ticket four-packs cost $445.

Good lineups, beautiful views and great weather made last year’s festival a surprisingly successful first-year event. Even though my wallet is thinning out by the minute due to the summer concert season, I can’t imagine passing this one up.

Lollapalooza Lineup Announced [Lollapolooza 2008]

Lollapolooza 2008

The lineup for Lollapolooza has been confirmed, and it looks like Perry Ferrel & Co. have thrown down the gauntlet, basically taking the Outside Lands Festival lineup, trimming some of the MoR-friendly fat, and mixing in more talent.

Word that Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, The Raconteurs, Wilco and Kanye West would headline the six-day festival in Chicago’s Grant Park came a few days ago. The full lineup was announced today after being leaked by Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times (who Ferrell has since dubbed “Pepe le Pew”).
