There’s no doubt about it – Radiohead is the finest band in existance right now. The band’s show last night at Outside Lands (barring two inexcusable sound failures) was amazing. There were far too many people and several annoyances with the festival (which may stem from me not liking festivals), but as Thom Yorke said after the second time the sound cut out: “In the end, it’s all about the music, right?”
Yep.
The music was sublime – played to perfection and nearly flawless. The band tore through an amazing set, starting with “15 Steps” then blasting through “Reckoner,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” “The National Anthem,” “Paranoid Android” and the set-closing “Everything In Its Right Place” among others. Here’s a setlist, courtesy of 58hours. The lighting was also spectacular, especially during “Everything In Its Right Place.” It was, regretably, my first time seeing Radiohead and I can’t wait to see them in a more friendly, personal venue, but for a good taste of what a real show would be like, Friday was hard to beat.

So, exciting times around these parts. Not only are 5 bajillion cool bands playing at Outside Lands a mere nine days from now, but we’re also breaking out of our little shell and throwing a party to celebrate the release of Cousin Chris‘ debut album Moon Paper. We’re inviting all our readers and fellow bloggers to join us next Thursday, Aug. 21 at House of Shields downtown (New Montgomery b/w Market and Mission) between 6PM and 10PM to celebrate the release of a great album and prime the pump for a great weekend ahead.
For those who don’t know, Chris Schreiber, aka, Cousin Chris, is a local boy who wrote, sang and played every instrument on Moon Paper. Rooted heavily in a blues (but not at all derivative), bathed in slide guitar and accented with his unique voice, Moon Paper carves out an original sound that, while minimalist, is still compelling and – most importantly – interesting. The album was recorded at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone studios where bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Nada Surf and Mike Watt have all recorded. Cousin Chris sat down with me for a chat, which you’ll find – along with a sample of his music – after the jump.
And don’t forget to come out to House of Shields next Thursday and support a local musician (and bloggers!).

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for… San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival has finally announced the stage schedule. There will be six stages and in my opinion they’ve done a pretty good job spreading out the acts. The only major problem I have is that the Black Keys and Beck are playing the same time slot on Friday night. What do you guys think?
Check out the Outside Lands stage schedule here.

OK, we’ve given a lot of attention to the Outside Lands Festival in this here part of West Blogistan – The Stranger and Vague Panther have drooled over it several times – but I’m going to play devil’s advocate. What if the lineup is too narrow, too indie-rock intensive without enough goodies for those of us who like to branch out. Yeah, it’s got Radiohead, but it’s also got Jack Johnson and Tom Petty. Good artists, but if I’m paying nearly $300 after fees for a show, I want those two nowhere near it. (more…)

Just a quick reminder that Outside Lands Festival tickets went on sale this morning.
Two tickets (and a nominal donation to both reforesting California and carbon offsets) set me back a whopping $530.90. The $262 I spent for my ticket is roughly what I spent on the past six months’ worth of concerts (including the Treasure Island Festival).
That said, in an attempt to rationalize my purchase, I figured out the $262 price came out to roughly $6.25 per band (there are currently 42 acts signed on). Even if I only catch half of those, it’s still only $12.50 a pop. I can live with that - especially when Radiohead, Wilco, and Broken Social Scene are on the list.
Even though I realize I’m just trying to excuse the ridiculous cost, it’s kind of working…

It looks like the Radiohead rumors were actually true. We just got an email from APE Concerts confirming that Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson will in fact be headlining the first annual Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco.
The Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is set to take place in San Francisco’s historic Golden Gate Park August 22-24 with Radiohead, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Jack Johnson and dozens of other bands and attractions. From singer-songwriters to DJs, jazz acts and cutting edge rock bands, all major music movements will be celebrated alongside a host of local musicians, food vendors and visual artists representing San Francisco’s vibrant cultural community.
No further artists were announced, but more details were promised to be forthcoming on the official Outside Lands Festival website.

Please, oh please be true. I promise I’ll be nice. I swear. I’ll start contributing to charity. Please don’t let the August 22 Radiohead concert in Golden Gate Park be a nasty internet rumor. Please let this Outside Lands Festival be a gift from the gods.
SF Weekly just posted that Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson are going to headline a festival in Golden Gate Park this August. We’ll post any and all updates.
