Outside Lands Festival - An MP3 Guide (Friday)

Outside Lands Festival MP3s

With the Outside Lands Festival coming up this weekend, we thought it’d be awful helpful to pull together playlists for each day of the festival so you can sample to a bit of each artist before you go. I’ve tried to find representative and/or live songs for each artist to give a good idea of what you’re in store for.

With our fancy new media player, you can even hit the little play button next to any song and listen to it as a mix even without downloading anything.

Here is the first of three days. We’ll post a new playlist each day. Enjoy:

Friday:

Radiohead - “Nude” [Live] (Bank of Boston Pavillion, 6/4/06)
Beck - “Chemtrails”
Manu Chao - “Clandestino” [Live] (In-studio performance at KCRW)
The Black Keys - “Psychotic Girl”
Cold War Kids - “Red Wine, Success!”
Steel Pulse - “Soldiers”
Lyrics Born - “I Changed My Mind”
Black Mountain - “Wucan”
Howlin Rain - “Dancers at the End of Time”
The Felice Brothers - “Frankie’s Gun!”
Carney - “Testify”
The Benevento/Russo Duo - “Play Pause Stop”

Meow Picks (Episode 6) - Not a Mix

I know you’re upset. I’m one day late. But after spending days and nights arguing the definition of a mix with the Stranger, I came to the conclusion that, alas, Meow Mix was not a mix. This is partially my fault - I never really intended it to be a mix, but rather a collection of some songs I’ve been listening to in the past week. And if I’m lucky maybe there a couple of bands in there that you’ve never heard of before. After all, that’s the only reason to come back, right? From this day forward, I declare Meow Mix to be Meow Picks.

This week’s episode includes The Bar-Kays “Soul Finger,” a track off the funktastic Superbad soundtrack, and Lykke Li’s “Dance Dance Dance” (because people need to be reminded how good her music is after this). The Ruby Suns “Kenya Dig It?” caught my attention because of the fact that it sounds like it belongs in an Animal Collective or Panda Bear album. And finally, I need to give a special thanks to ipickmynose who posted Iver’s “Skinny Love” a few weeks ago and reminded me of how much I love that song. Ennnnnnjoy.

MP3s:

Bon Iver - Skinny Love
The Black Keys - Psychotic Girl
Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance
The Ruby Suns - Kenya Dig It?
Sigur Ros - Festival [Box.net]
Brendan Canning - Chameleon
The Bar-Kays - Soul Finger
Atlas Sound - River Card

Behind the Curve: I Finally See “I’m Not There”

Last night I caught the cryptic Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There, for the first time. As you probably already know it features “six distinct stages of Dylan’s public life and persona portrayed by an ensemble cast: Marcus Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett.” (source). What exactly does that mean? Well, for one, the surreal quality of the film is greatly enhanced by alcohol or other mind altering substances… ahem. My roommates left me to watch alone after the first half hour.

Lollapalooza Lineup Announced [Lollapolooza 2008]

Lollapolooza 2008

The lineup for Lollapolooza has been confirmed, and it looks like Perry Ferrel & Co. have thrown down the gauntlet, basically taking the Outside Lands Festival lineup, trimming some of the MoR-friendly fat, and mixing in more talent.

Word that Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, The Raconteurs, Wilco and Kanye West would headline the six-day festival in Chicago’s Grant Park came a few days ago. The full lineup was announced today after being leaked by Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times (who Ferrell has since dubbed “Pepe le Pew”).
