Panther Picks (Episode 13) - Lucky 13

I have a good feeling about these picks despite their unlucky number. Who would have thought that Peter, Bjorn and John’s new LP Seaside Rock would be an instrumental? Not I. But then again they’re from Sweden, so I guess that makes it ok.

I was also inspired by today’s David Byrne & Brian Eno release to post “Glass, Concrete and Stone,” the highlight of the In Good Company soundtrack that makes me shutter with fear of corporate America. And yes, I finally gave into all the Okkervil River hype - although I’m not completely sold on the whole album, “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe” isn’t all bad. Check it out and judge for yourself.

MP3s:

Peter, Bjorn and John - “Inland Empire”
Bark Hide and Horn - “Treasure of the Everglades”
David Byrne - “Glass, Concrete and Stone”
TV on the Radio - “Let the Devil In”
Yo La Tengo - “Black Flowers”
Okkervil River - “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe”

TV on the Radio Reveals New Album Name, Tracklist

TV on the Radio

Details have finally emerged about a new album, Dear Science, due to be released in the US on September 23 via Interscope (the rest of the world gets it a day earlier via 4AD).

The tracklist for the long-awaited follow-up to the epic Return to Cookie Mountain (my favorite album of 2006 by a landslide), appeared in a Blender.com article and was confirmed by the band’s publicist and website.

TVotR have also added additional dates to their North American tour, now pushing into November. (Full dates here.) At the risk of sounding like I’m gushing, their show at the FIllmore last year is on a very short list for the best concert I’ve ever seen. I can’t recommend checking them out enough. Bay Area readers will get a chance to catch TVonR at this year’s Treasure Island Festival in September.

Meow Mix (Episode 5) - Nine Lives

The cat references are getting better every week. This mix features some great new music from the Fleet Foxes and Plants and Animals, as well as my favorite song off of the Rushmore soundtrack (The Who).

I also have a special treat for those readers who fancy themselves lyricists - I’ve been working on Hula Hands for a while but am frustrated by the lack of vocals. Feel free to download, sample and lay down a vocal track. I’ll feature it in a post if you send me back your version.

MP3s:

J Dilla - Nothing Like This
Fleet Foxes - Innocent Son
Plants and Animals - Keep It Real
New Buffalo - Cheer Me Up Thank You
TV on the Radio - Province
Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf - Fair Weathered Friend
Valley of Giants - Westworld
The Who - A Quick One While He’s Away (Box.net)
Vague Panther - Hula Hands

Justice & Raconteurs to Headline 2008 Treasure Island

Treasure Island Festival

Another Planet Entertainment just announced the lineup for the 2nd annual Treasure Island Music Festival. Headlining this year’s event will be Justice and the Raconteurs, with other big names such as Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend, Stranger-Dance-favorites TV on the Radio, and a host of smaller bands rounding out the two-day festival.

A.P.E. was smart to include some solid local acts to this year’s event, inviting the Dodos, Mike Relm and Bay Area mainstay John Vanderslice to perform.

A limited number of early-bird two-day tickets will be available for $99 through a pre-sale on May 29. Regular single-day ($65) and two-day tickets ($115) go on sale May 30. VIP ticket four-packs cost $445.

Good lineups, beautiful views and great weather made last year’s festival a surprisingly successful first-year event. Even though my wallet is thinning out by the minute due to the summer concert season, I can’t imagine passing this one up.

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head [Album Review]

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head album

I’ve been holding off on posting anything about this, but I buckled. Scarlett Johansson released her debut vanity album last week. The album is a collection of Tom Waits covers with one original thrown in.

Can’t she just be happy being hot and a pretty good actress? Did she really need to go out and piss all over my favorite musician’s back catalog? Apparently, she thought she did. She somehow dragged two of my other favorite musicians down with her - the album is produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, and features David Bowie (?!?), as well as members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration.

Sitek’s production work was a large part of what made TotR’s Return to Cookie Mountain one of the best albums of this decade, but it sounds out of place and overdone in this setting. Scarlett’s husky voice is swathed in reverb and buried in the mix — probably to be more forgiving to her sub-par voice.

Below is a video for “Falling Down” and an MP3 of her slaughtering one of my favorite songs from Tom’s weird phase (ok, his weirder phase) — a song I want played at my funeral.
