The Roots to be Jimmy Fallon’s House Band. What?!
Occasional fuuny man Jimmy Fallon confirmed the rumors that the Roots will be his house band when he takes over “Late Night” from Conan O’Brien next year. The announcement was made at the end of Fallon’s new video blog.
Hip-hop blog Nah Right started the rumors flying when they posted a YouTube interview with the Roots’ drummer ?uestlove, claiming that The Roots were retiring from touring in order to become Jimmy’s house band. But the video was quickly pulled, leaving people scrambling to figure out whether it was true or a cruel, cruel joke. Sadly, it was no joke.
We’re pretty stunned that Fallon was able to land the Roots, but it gives us one reason to tune in (’cuz we sure weren’t going to otherwise). As the best hip-hop act we’ve ever seen live, we’re also extremely sad to hear that the Roots are hanging up their touring shoes.

Still think it’s a publicity stunt… there’s no way that will last. Unless the Roots really do want to commit career suicide.
This is a fucking travesty…if it’s true…I mean, WTF?!!
they deserve it.
constant touring for the past 15 years or so, come on give them break.
yo guys do your thing!!!!
I agree with Vague Panther. Don’t think it will last more than a season….at least I hope.
Would be really smart of them if they had the Roots kick it off and then held a contest or battle of the bands to have a new house band each month.
Yeah, touring has got to be tough – especially if you do it as much as they do. I’d be more than happy to play once a night in the same place for, what I can only imagine is great money.
I’m fully supportive of whatever choices they make, but I can’t help but wonder if they couldn’t get a better gig. It’s just that this feels a little like playing the Copa in Atlantic City…
It’d be different if it were for Conan or the Daily Show (or even Letterman… or Leno…)
Remember that post you guys did about selling out? Might be time for an addendum…
Nah, that’s not selling out at all. I’ll be the first to admit that Jimmy Fallon made me laugh on SNL. Sure, all he did was laugh at his own jokes, but it made me laugh.
Now, I’ll kindly eat my words when his shows blows like it probably will. …
