Yarrrgh! Lambchop Says ‘Talk Like a Pirate’

Pirate Kurt Wagner

Today is the official International Talk Like a Pirate Day. To honor it, we give you “National Talk Like a Pirate Day,” the lead single from Lambchop’s 11th full-length studio album, OH (Ohio) — due out October 7 (pre-order here).

OK, I’ll admit it’s a cheesy tie-in, but Lambchop has been a favorite of mine for years so I’m going with it. For those not familiar with the ‘Chop, they refer to themselves as “Nashville’s most fucked-up country band,” and Allmusic calls them “arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s.” I say split the difference and you’re getting close.

Originally taking inspiration from Nashville’s Countrypolitan sound of the ’60s and ’70s, which added strings and slick production to country music (think Glen Campbell, Tammy Wynette or even Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”), Lambchop has also heavily incorporated R&B into the sound (owing a great deal to Curtis Mayfield in particular) to create a sound that is uniquely their own.

Although nominally a band, Lambchop is really the brainchild of front-man and songwriter Kurt Wagner. With an revolving cast — as large as 23 members on previous albums — OH (Ohio) is a more intimate affair (by their standards), with a modest nine-member core contributing.

For more, the Aquarium Drunkard caught up with Wagner earlier this month.
